Aim: The objective of this study was to characterize the publications on hospital dentistry available on websites and Instagram pages, in addition to evaluating the quality of the available content from the point of view of scientific evidence and the use of references. Methods: A cross-sectional and exploratory study was carried out. From the research of the search key "hospital dentistry", Instagram and Internet pages were located via Google. Results: On Instagram, 15 pages that met the inclusion criteria were located, and the last 5 publications were analyzed (n=75). For Google, content that corresponded to the bill was evaluated, among the first 25 search results, since these are the most relevant based on the algorithm's marking. It was noticed that the use of references is not frequent either in Instagram publications or in Internet content. This fact is so important that the results of this work demonstrate this urgency in changing the scenario of content published on the World Wide Web. Conclusion: In this sense, professors and the councils themselves can act as compasses, guiding the dissemination and consumption of content to students and health professionals. (AU)

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: The Japanese Dental Society of Anesthesiology (JDSA) has conducted a survey on the safety of anesthetic practice provided by dental anesthesiologists. This report includes information on the incidence of life-threating events, which is necessary for evaluating the safety of dental anesthesia. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This study was designed as a retrospective observational questionnaire-based survey. All 32 JDSA accredited training facilities participated in this study. The accredited facilities were requested to provide annual data on basic demographic information concerning anesthetic management during the 5-year period from 2014 to 2018, inclusive. Details regarding life-threatening events were also requested. RESULTS: During the survey period between 2014 and 2018, a total of 219,343 cases of anesthetic management (80,138 cases of general anesthesia, 127,819 cases of sedation, and 11,386 cases of monitoring) were reported by the 32 JDSA accredited training facilities. The overall incidence of life-threatening events occurring during clinical dental anesthesia was 2.14/10,000, while the incidence of anesthesia-related events was 0.96/10,000. No deaths arising from anesthesia-related events occurred. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first survey on clinical outcomes of dental anesthesia to be conducted. The survey results provide evidence supporting the safety of anesthetic management as performed by dental anesthesiologists. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The results of this study will provide a basis for benchmarking the safety of dental anesthesia not only in Japan, but also around the world.

RESUMO

The British Dental Association came into being in 1880 after a long fight to obtain professional status for dental practitioners, including qualifications and registration. It later formed geographically situated branches to bring it closer to the membership, easing scientific, political and social interchange. Many leading members of the profession belonged to its Metropolitan Branch, founded in 1888.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To assess the awareness and usage of mobile apps and social media among orthodontic clinicians to support patients with orthodontic treatment, support the professional development of orthodontists, and identify any relevant apps and social media platforms currently recommended to patients. DESIGN: Cross-sectional questionnaire-based study. SETTING: United Kingdom. METHODS: A questionnaire was developed and distributed to members of the British Orthodontic Society (BOS). To increase the response rate, the questionnaire was circulated at three time points between January and March 2020. RESULTS: A total of 149 orthodontists responded to the questionnaire (15% response rate) with 113 orthodontists completing all questions (11.4%). Of those who answered, 81% (n = 111) had been qualified for >10 years, 35% worked in practice (n = 48), 34% worked in a hospital (n = 47) and 26% worked in both hospital and practice (n = 36). The results indicated that 20% of clinicians (n = 22) used apps to support patients and 33% (n = 37) reported using apps for professional purposes. Brush DJ appeared to be the most popular patient focused app (39%, n = 18) whereas the IOTN (17%, n = 8), Invisalign (17%, n = 8) and Dental Monitoring apps (9%, n = 4) were the most popular clinician-focused apps. With regard to social media, 53% (n = 60) of respondents reported that they used social media to communicate generic orthodontic information and promote their practice to patients. The most commonly used social media platforms were Facebook and Instagram. Of respondents, 96% expressed a willingness to recommend an evidence-based mobile app to patients if available, and 88% were willing to recommend an evidence-based social media platform. CONCLUSIONS: Orthodontic clinicians are utilising mobile apps and social media to support both patients and their own professional development. There is a willingness to increase the use of evidence-based platforms and apps to support patients.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on dental anesthesiologists has not been examined. This study aimed to determine how the COVID-19 pandemic affected Japanese dental anesthesiologists' professional lives. METHODS: An online questionnaire related to the effects of COVID-19 on dental anesthesiologists' professional lives was emailed to 351 board-certified dental anesthesiology specialists from the Japanese Dental Society of Anesthesiology. The endpoints of this study were changes in income and job satisfaction as a dental anesthesiologist from 2019 prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. RESULTS: A total of 141 dental anesthesiologists participated in the survey. Most respondents reported no change in income relative to 2019 for 2020 or 2021. Significantly more dental anesthesiologists reported income decreases relative to 2019 for 2020 (39%) vs 2021 (21.3%; P = .001). Very few dental anesthesiologists reported income increases relative to 2019 for 2020 (2.1%) vs 2021 (15.6%; P < .001). Job satisfaction as a dental anesthesiologist remained unchanged for all 3 years. CONCLUSION: Even though many Japanese dental anesthesiologist specialists lost income because of COVID-19, they maintained their job satisfaction.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: It is 50 years since publication of the first volume of the British Journal of Orthodontics (BJO). Now known as the Journal of Orthodontics (JO), the official journal of the British Orthodontic Society strives to published high quality, evidence-based research. AIM: To compare the content of articles published by the BJO in 1973-1974 with those in the JO in 2022-2023 to identify any changes over 50 years. METHODS: BJO volume 1 issues 1-5 and JO volume 49 issues 2-4 and volume 50 issues 1-2 were hand-searched and full articles obtained. Some articles were excluded. The included reports were assessed using objective criteria (see Supplemental materials). RESULTS: Similar proportions of articles reporting the results of studies collecting data directly from participants of orthodontic interest were published (BJO: n = 12, 26%; JO: n = 15, 23%); however, there was an increase in the proportion of articles reporting studies that collected data from a non-orthodontic patient sample (BJO: n = 5, 11%; JO: n = 15, 23%). There was also an increase in the reporting of prospective data collection (BJO: n = 1; 6%; JO: n = 23, 79%), but much of this research was cross-sectional (BJO: n = 8, 50%; JO: n = 20, 69%), using convenience sampling (BJO: n = 13, 81%; JO: n = 23, 79% of articles reporting the results of data collected from human participants). Most research was non-experimental (BJO: n = 16, 100%; JO: n = 26, 90%). CONCLUSIONS: Some similarities in the types of reports published were found, as well as some encouraging differences. Decreasing retrospective data reports and increasing prospective data reports is welcome, but many are still non-experimental and cross-sectional. There is a need to publish more longitudinal, experimental clinical data to enhance knowledge and understanding of the effects of orthodontic treatment.
